I apologize in advance if this topic is too useless to post or if it has already been covered before. But, according to Jass rules, the apple or Putz variant should only be available to 3 or 5 players. However, I realized that the variant also works if played with 4 players. Should this be possible and I haven't heard about it before?

Yes, this is possible. However, with 4 players, it's recommended and much more interesting to play normal Jass.
