barbu: confusing behavior of all or nothing

1. HeadphoneJack,

Hello,

Something weird happened while playing barbu today. The contract chosen was salad, specifically the rules were first and last trick are worth 30 points, king of clubs is worth -60, and each ten is worth 15.

I took the king of clubs, Sarah Connor took the first trick, Dr. House took 2 tens, while Peter Pan took 2 tens and the last trick.

Yet at the end of the round this happened:

Peter pan has picked all the points of the round!
Doctor house gets 30 points.
Sarah connor gets 30 points.
HeadphoneJack loses 60 points.
Peter pan loses 60 points.

Is the "pick all the points in the round" just mean get the equal amount to the total points in the round (302 + 154 - 60 = 60), even if one doesn't actually take all the scoring parts?

2. Aminiel,

Hello,

It's exactly as you ahve described, but I agree that it isn't at all logical.

In fact the problem is that there is a mix of positive and negative parts to the score. It makes the all-or-nothing kind of meaningless, because if we reformulate it as take all cards giving points, what it might supposed to be instead of taking all points of the round, then the resulting score is 0, as contracts of type take the first/last/nth trick normally don't count in the all-or-nothing. Since the whole point of the all-or-nothing is to negate your score, this perhaps better formulation doesn't make sense in this particular case either.

I don't know if it would be better or very logical to disable the all-or-nothing when tehre is such a mix of positive and negative parts, either. So I'm quite stuck on how it should be handled to be the most intuitive.

3. HeadphoneJack,

Hello,

As a player, I'd assume that "all or nothing" meant to take all the scoring cards, regardless if they are positive or negative. If I remember correctly takinga ll tricks in bonus salad would give + 500 points (or however many there are) but then again it's all negative points there, in a way.

Another way is to handle it like hearts and the jack of diamonds, only take the penalty cards into account for the all or nothing and score absed on that, then add onto it the negative scoring cards. In hearts when you shoot the moon and take the jack of diamonds (assuming the variation is enabled) you get -10 points and everyone else gets 26 points, or if one of them got the jack they'd get 16 points.
