I was wondering, if we press the key 'u' even when nobody has UNO, do we incur penalty poins?
I often aimlessly press the key in group matches, but, am thinking if this is counter-productive.
If I myself am incurring penalty points, I would try to minimize this practice.

I think your topic has a wrong title; you don't win any penelty points, when you press u for catching someone who hasn't say "uno". You just win points when you intersept late or with a wrong card, and it says "too late" each too late you hear means you gain 3 points there's no other penelty points.
